Bicarb vs Bicarb Free Deodorant

Bicarb vs Bicarb Free Deodorant

If you’ve been doing your natural deodorant research you’ll already know that many natural deodorants have bicarb soda in their formulas.

Bicarb Soda is a super popular ingredient in natural deodorants because it's such an incredibly effective deodoriser. Plus, it’s cheap too which is a nice bonus.

However bicarb soda does have a downside – for some people it can cause irritation. (Spoiler alert - we've got bicarb free options for you!)

The problem with bicarb soda in natural deodorants

Bicarb is brilliant at neutralising odour, and cheap, which is why it turns up in so many natural deodorants. The catch is what happens once it meets sweat.

Bicarb pushes the skin's surface towards alkaline, and skin is naturally slightly acidic. How well skin gets on with that varies hugely from person to person, which is exactly why bicarb suits some people beautifully and not others.

Our bicarb free options

For anyone who would rather skip bicarb altogether, we have options. These use magnesium hydroxide instead. It handles odour in a similar way, but magnesium hydroxide barely dissolves in sweat, so less of it is at work on your skin at any one time.

That is what makes it the gentler choice for a lot of people.

  • Woohoo Mellow – Mellow is our original bicarb-free deodorant formula and is also free from essential oils, for the complete skin-loving natural deodorant.
  • Woohoo Tango – Tango is also bicarb free but comes with an energising tangerine and lemon scent that’ll make you feel like dancing the day away.
  • Woohoo Drift - bicarb free and Extra Strength, so you don't have to trade strength for skipping the bicarb. A fresh-but-subtle sea-salt and melon aroma.

How we make our bicarb formulas

Here at Woohoo Body we do things differently. We use just the right amount of bicarb and we build the formula around protecting your skin.

Zinc oxide is the hero, helping protect your skin's natural barrier, with shea butter to keep things soft. Working out exactly how much bicarb we needed took nine months of wear testing by Aaron - putting his pits on the line for the greater good!

Important note: If your skin is on the sensitive side and you're using our bicarb formulas, we would start you on a Regular Strength rather than an Extra Strength, which carries more bicarb.
